    Michael Abrahamian received the 2013 North Haven Lions Club Scholarship recipient. Abrahamian has matriculated at Stonehill College.

    • American Association of Teachers of French Annual Le Grand Concours Nationally Ranked Students: North Haven Middle School 8th-graders Adra Chbihi, Hillary Hoyt, Olivia Irons, Anna Iskra, and Genevieve Richardson, and 7th-grader Francesco Spirli.

    Jennifer Bango, a social work major, was inducted into the Providence College chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the national honor society for Foreign Language Studies.

    Elizabeth Baptie, a student at Keene State College, participated in Keene State's 13th annual Academic Excellence Conference. Baptie presented "Stranded on the Urban Heat Island: Temperature Analysis and Mitigation Strategies in Keene, New Hampshire."

    Jamie Bowerman, a graduate of North Haven High School and Savannah College of Art and Design (master of fine arts, industrial design; bachelor of fine arts, graphic design), was selected as a top designer in The Battery Conservancy Americas's "Draw Up a Chair" Design Competition.

    • Choate Rosemary Hall Graduates: Marlon Antunez graduated cum laude and received the Aurelian Honor Society Award and the School Seal Prize. He will attend Stanford University. Joseph Schwab will attend Bryant University.

    Jillian M. Ceballos earned a bachelor's of arts, cum laude, Clark University. While at Clark, Ceballos received the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures's Theodore and Phyllis Barbera Award for Excellence in Spanish.

    Bennett Della Valle participated in the biennial Grandparents and Special Friends Day at Hamden Hall Country Day School with his grandfather Paul Alogna of Hamden.

    Megan Dwyer, a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, presented research on the PINK1 (Pten induced putative kinase I) and PTEN (phosphastase and tensin homolog) genes in C. elegans and C. dentata at Experimental Biology 2013, a scientific meeting held at the Boston Convention and iExhibition Center.

    Wesley Haaf earned the Eagle Scout rank in his final Board of Review at Troop 811. Haaf earned all ranks and 41 merit bages in his trail to Eagle, culimating in his Eagle Scout Project, which involved renovating the stage at Faith United Methodist Church. He is also an Order of the Arrow member and performed with the Native American dance team the Quinnipiac Dancers.

    Alexandra Iezzi received a college scholarship from The Watershed Fund, a non-profit organization established by the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority.

    Nick Iott, a senior, and Kevin Iott, a freshman, members of Xavier's robotics team number 4557, the "FullMetal Falcons," recently competed in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's FIRST Regional Tournament. The team placed 25th out of 40, with a total of 623 points. The FullMetal Falcons also won four awards: No. 1 for Pit Safety; the Underwriters' Laboratory "Star of the Day" award; the "Highest Rookie Seed" award; and the "Rookie All Star" award.

    Ivanna Izzo graduated from Mercy High School.

    Christina L. Kling, a senior biotechnology major who serves as a lab assistant in chemistry and chemical engineering, has been named a John Hatfield Scholar for 2013-'14 at the University of New Haven.

    Daniel Laffin, a graduate of Albertus Magnus College with a bachelor's of science, has been inducted into Kappa Gamma Pi, the national Catholic college graduate honor society.

    Thomas Lambert earned a bachelor's of science in biology from Hofstra University.

    Dana Lefland has matriculated at the University of Delaware.

    Raeanne Nuzzo, daughter of Katherine and James Nuzzo, ranked third in her graduating class at Sacred Heart University. Nuzzo will attend George Washington University and plans to study archaeology. She was awarded cum laude for her performance on the 2013 National Latin Examinations.

    Kelsey Brock O'Brien earned a bachelor's of business administration, human resources management, from Baylor University.

    Melissa Meghan Sosensky graduated summa cum laude from the University of Connecticut with a major in allied health sciences and a minor in psychology. She is a two-time recipient of the university's New England Scholar award. Sosensky will attend the Yale University School of Nursing, pursuing a master's degree in pediatric nursing and a career as an APRN. She is the granddaughter of Jerry and Roberta Pendleton of Madison, Stanley Sosensky of North Haven, and the daughter of Dana and Michael Sosensky of Madison.

    Chris Warner, a student at Gateway Community College, won a $500 award for the best-written executive summary in the Personal Business category in the Connecticut Collegiate Business Plan Competition. He also won $500 for placing second for his overall business plan and 10-minute presentation. Warner's idea was for the Pancake Power gourmet food truck.

    Career Achievements

    Dr. Abayomi Akanji has been appointed to the founding faculty of the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. As a professor of medical sciences, Akanji will be responsible for teaching clinical chemistry and endocrinology in the new medical school, which will train primary care physicians on Quinnipiac's North Haven Campus.

    Lynn Amarante, assistant vice president of critical care services and emergency services at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, has joined the board of directors for the Wallingford YMCA. Amarante will serve a three-year term.

    Mohammed Bey, director of multicultural education at Quinnipiac University, has become a member of the National Advisory Council to NCORE, the National Conference for Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education. Bey graduated from Marian University of Fond du Lac with a bachelor's in public and professional communication and a master's in organizational leadership and quality. He is working on a doctorate in philosophy and social psychology at Walden University.

    Christian De Mayo has been promoted to the rank of Captain with the United States Marine Corps in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. De Mayo is deployed with the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines, an Infantry Battalion based out of Twentynine Palms, California. It is De Mayo's second deployment to Afghanistan. Captain De Mayo is the son of Cathy-Ann and Rick De Mayo.

    Dr. Craig W. Edmondson of Sandy Hook, executive director of Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES), North Haven, has joined the Special Olympics Connecticut Board of Directors.

    State Sen. Len Fasano received an award for Special Legislative Recognition from the Connecticut Marine Trades Association (CMTA) for his contributions to the state's recreational boating industry. Fasano was also honored for his service to the veterans' community in Connecticut.

    • Attorney George P. Guertin, managing partner of Guertin and Guertin, LLC, has been selected as a FIVE-STAR Wealth Manager for the third year in a row, and was featured in the December issue of Connecticut Magazine.

    Alton G. Hudson has been named President-Elect for the 2013-14 Elk year of Hamden Lodge 2224 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

    Robert Joven has been appointed associate director for public services at the Health Sciences Library on Quinnipiac University's North Haven Campus. Joven is responsible for working with faculty and students in the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Nursing.

    William Kohlhepp, associate dean of the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University, has been re-elected to a three-year term as secretary-treasurer of the Physician Assistant Education Association.

    Sean Hamill and Ryan Veilleux have joined the North Haven office of the Law Offices of Carter Mario Injury Lawyers as litigation attorneys.

    Bryan Markiewicz has been appointed assistant principal of ACES Mill Road School in North Haven.

    • North Haven Middle School teachers Alicia Crismale and Krista Kaplan completed a training program on "Echoes and Reflections: A Multimedia Curriculum on the Holocaust," a comprehensive 10-part curriculum on the Holocaust.

    Alexandra Penfold held a book signing at the North Haven Barnes and Noble for her recently published book, New York a la Cart. Penfold earned a bachelor's of arts from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University.

    • Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES) has named Cindy Ratchelous principal of ACES Mill Road School in North Haven. Ratchelous had served as the assistant principal at ACES Mill Road School since 2007.

    Ashley Rossi was selected as one of eight female models to appear on the television show America's Next Top Model. Rossi dreamed of modeling since an early age, and at age 16 was discovered by John Casablanca's of Connecticut.

    Stephen Tagliatela, co-owner of the Saybrook Point Inn & Spa, received an honorary doctorate of business from the University of New Haven.

    • Wine and Roses 2012 Winners: Paul Pandolfi, John Lavorgna, and Mark Santore, Tre Ginzo Vino amateur wine-makers, received the first place People's Choice Award for the second year in a row for their Pinot Noir blend. They were also awarded third place in the Professional category.

    Matt Wright has been named director of fitness and coaching at Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness in North Haven.

    Service Awards and Recognitions

    Bernadette Casella has been named 2012-'13 North Haven Rotarian of the Year.

    Ann DeLucia received the Clelia Merloni Charism Award, given by the sisters of the United States Province of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. DeLucia has volunteered for more than 30 years with the retired sisters at Sacred Heart Manor and with the clients at the Apostles-run Clelian Adult Day Center.

    Larry Lazaroff was this year's honoree at the North Haven Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge 2805 annual Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner. Lazaroff's dedication and generosity have resulted in Arnold's Jewelers sponsoring many local baseball and softball teams, the North Haven Concerts on the Green, and many events at North Haven Middle School and North Haven High School.

    Albina Cannavaciolo and First Selectman Michael Freda received the New Haven Boys & Girls Club Alumni Gold Ring Award. Rings are presented to honorees in recognition of the volunteer service they perform in the community.

    Acts of Community Service and Charitable Contributions

    • Since 2007, Melissa Daniele, owner of Be Some Body Fitness and Pilates LLC in North Haven, has led a team in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides to End Breast Cancer" walk. First Selectman Michael Freda congratulated Daniele and two of her teammates on their success. For the third year in a row, "Team Be Some Body" was the leading fundraiser, collecting more than $6,200. Vanessa Pomarico-Denino, APRN was recognized as a pacesetter for the third year in a row, and Kim Sekelsky was also a top fundraiser for the team.

    Kelly O'Leary, the principal of St. Martin de Porres Academy, was recognized by Sacred Heart Academy for her compassion, commitment to community, and contributions to the academy.

    Dan Perrotto from Bikes for Babes was presented with a Certificate of Recognition from the North Haven Community Services Commission for his donation of bicycles and helmets to the youth of North Haven.

    Sabrina Pond, a 17-year-old junior at North Haven High School, organized a cookie and lemonade stand at the high school to raise money for the tornado victims. Pond baked cookies for the sale, rallied friends and family to help out, and created flyers. The group raised only about $200 due to poor weather, so Pond went door to door to sell more. Slightly more than $550 was donated to the Red Cross.

    • St. John's Episcopal Church Community Supper Volunteers: Debbie Volain, Theresa Ranciato-Viele, Donna Mae Cangiano, Brendon McCaffrey, John Costanzo, Mary Jane Mulligan, Rene Genest, George Guertin, Michael Hallahan, and Luigi Nuzzolillo, members of the North Haven Rotary Club, and John and Nancy Graef.

    Susan Spaulding, who was diagnosed with MS in 2005, hosted a French horn orchestra Benefit Concert for the Connecticut Chapter of the National MS Society at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Haven and at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Manchester. The concerts raised $7,355. Spaulding performed as a lead horn.
