New London — A New London man was arrested Tuesday after police said he attempted to pawn a New London Fire Department mountain bike at the Yankee Peddler and Pawn shop on State Street.
Charles Manzlak, 32, of 19 Jay St., was charged with fourth-degree larceny.
Police said two Waterford police officers were at the pawn shop for an unrelated matter when they saw the bicycle and brought it to the attention of the city's police and fire departments. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m.
Police said that Manzlak said he had a relative who was a firefighter and that Manzlak bought the bike during a charity event. He further added that he had seven more bicycles just like it.
The bicycle, which had City of New London Fire Department markings and identifiers, was stolen from a holding shed located behind the fire headquarters on Bank Street, police said. All bicycles have since been moved.
Manzlak was released on a $1,500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Oct. 15.
