East Lyme schools confirm cases of whooping cough

East Lyme — The town's school district has reported “confirmed cases of pertussis,” commonly known as whooping cough, at East Lyme High School and Flanders Elementary School.

The superintendent notified parents and guardians of the cases and provided information about the symptoms of the illness in a letter Wednesday.

“If your child has symptoms or develops symptoms compatible with pertussis, it is important to contact your child’s health care provider,” Superintendent James Lombardo wrote. “It is also a good idea to make sure your child is up to date on his or her vaccines to protect against pertussis.”

In addition to information provided, he suggested that those seeking more information contact their health care provider or the Connecticut Immunization Program.
