2 injured following head-on collision with wrong way driver on I-95 South

Emergency beacons from police and fire department vehicles light up the fog as emergency crews work the scene of a multiple car accident on I-95 southbound between exits 88 and 87 Saturday night Jan. 11, 2014. Three cars were involved and multiple ambulances were called to the scene. I-95 South was closed while the scene was cleared.

Groton - Two people were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital this evening following a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver on southbound Interstate 95.

Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Jason Pollard, acting captain of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department.

The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. between exits 88 and 87, resulting in the closure of the highway during the emergency response. Visibility was limited due to heavy fog.

Three cars were involved, including two that collided in the center lane and a third that was sideswiped, according to Pollard. The fire department used the Jaws of Life to extricate one driver from a vehicle, Pollard said.

Several local ambulance companies responded along with state police, who are investigating. The highway reopened shortly after 5 p.m.
