TOO-TIGHT TURN TAKES OUT HYDRANT

Ledyard - A tractor-trailer made a too-sharp turn just after 5 p.m. Thursday onto Hurlbutt Road from Route 12, striking and taking a fire hydrant with it.

The driver stayed at the scene until police arrived. Love Doctor Walker, 76, of Elyria, Ohio, was cited for making an improper turn.

Lt. Michael Finkelstein said the hydrant, which was ripped cleanly from its post, was built to disconnect in this manner as a precaution against wayward vehicles. Walker was "making a delivery," Finkelstein.

No other details were available.
