West Marine store plan to get hearing Tuesday in Stonington

Published January 20. 2014 4:00AM

Mystic - The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission will hold two public hearings Tuesday night on a controversial plan to build a West Marine store on land currently owned by Mystic Aquarium at the intersection of Coogan and Maritime drives.

The aquarium uses the property for overflow parking. In order to replace those 142 parking spots, it is seeking a separate approval to use another lot it owns on Maritime Drive for 168 parking spots. The hearings will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mystic Middle School. West Marine has a store in the nearby McQuade's Marketplace complex.

The aquarium's parent organization, Sea Research Foundation, and developer Waterstone Retail, are seeking permits to use 1.7 acres of the current 11.1-acre parking lot site for construction of the 13,000-square-foot store and 53 parking spots as well as three acres of a 10.47-acre site for the new parking.
