Mystic practice of Dr. Roy Main closes

Editor's note: This version of this article corrects an earlier version that incorrectly reported the amount of marijuana involved.

Mystic - Main Medical, the internal medicine practice of Dr. Roy Main, closed Monday, and patients are being referred to the Montville Backus Health Center, where two physician assistants running the practice for the past few months have been transferred.

Main, 59, a Westerly resident, had privileges at The Westerly Hospital and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, but is now on leave of absence from the L+M medical staff, spokesman Mike O'Farrell said Wednesday. Both hospitals are part of L+M Healthcare Corp. Main's private practice office was at 23 Clara Drive.

Main was arrested by Westerly police in August and charged with felony breaking and entering a stranger's home on Comanche Court. Main said at the time that he had mistakenly thought he was at a friend's home. Police searched his car after the arrest and found two bags containing about six grams of marijuana and detected the odor of marijuana smoke in his car. Police did not charge him in connection with the marijuana possession.

His case is pending in Washington County Superior Court.

A month after his arrest, the Rhode Island Department of Health suspended Main's license to practice medicine in that state.

According to information on the Connecticut Department of Public Health website, Main's medical license remains active in Connecticut.

Shawn Mawhiney, spokesman for The William W. Backus Hospital, said Wednesday that a hotline has been set up to help patients re-establish care in the Backus system - including at a new medical center Backus is considering opening in Waterford - or to have their records transferred elsewhere. The hotline number is (860) 892-2766.
