Ledyard voters get to decide on $52.7 million budget Tuesday

Ledyard -- The town will hold a referendum on the 2014-2015 budget Tuesday.

Voters will decide whether to support a budget of $52,683,926, as recommended by the Town Council and presented at Town Meeting Monday. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at District One -- Ledyard Center School; and Districts Two and Three -- Juliet W. Long School.

The budget would result in a 6 percent increase in the tax rate, a rise of 1.75 mills.

Registered voters and property owners in town are eligible to vote.

The Board of Education cut nearly half a million dollars from its proposed 2014-15 budget, eliminating multiple staff members and extracurricular activities, following a directive from the council to reduce the school budget by $495,000. The remaining increase in the proposed school budget is $535,898, a 1.8 percent increase.

The council also made $123,000 in cuts to the general government budget.
