New London — Some residents on Montauk Avenue were evacuated from their homes Monday morning as police responded to a call for a man who threatened to harm himself and others, police said.
At about 11:20 a.m., police officers were called to the area of Montauk and Willetts avenues where an allegedly emotionally disturbed man had threatened to hurt himself with a gun. The man, who police did not identify, also allegedly threatened to hurt anyone who tried to enter his house, according to police.
After temporarily closing Montauk Avenue, police officers made contact with the man and convinced him to leave his house.
Once he was outside, officers subdued him and removed a knife from the man’s possession, police said. The man was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for a psychological evaluation, police said.
No further information was immediately available.
