    Shooting victim also arrested

A 19-year-old Norwich man who was shot at a party on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation on Sept. 5, 2009 was arraigned Thursday at G.A. 10 on a gun possession charge.

Elson J. Canuto, 19, was charged  Wednesday by state police with carrying a pistol without a permit.

Canuto suffered gunshot injuries to the torso, abdomen and left arm while at a party on Ann Wampey Drive in Mashantucket.

Canuto is being held on a $100,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 11.

On Monday, Victor M. Williams, 21, of Norwich, was arrested  and charged with reckless endangerment, possession of an illegal firearm, attempted murder, first-degree assault and possession of a pistol without a permit.

Witnesses told police that Williams shot Canuto with a two-shot Derringer pistol with a pearl handle and that Canuto also had a gun, a chrome .38 revolver.

Canuto has since recovered but told state police in an interview in November that one bullet remained inside him. He also told police that he knew Williams and Williams’ friends, whom he used to hang out with, as the “East Side Boyz.” One of the witnesses to the shooting said Canuto and Williams had problems going as far back as middle school.
