    Special Olympics torch to pass through region

    Officers representing local, state, federal and correctional agencies will carry the "Flame of Hope" through eastern Connecticut today during the first day of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

    The run takes place annually to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics. More than 1,500 athletes and law enforcement officers are expected to carry a torch 530 miles in the run, culminating Friday at Southern Connecticut State University for the opening ceremonies for Special Olympics Summer Games weekend.

    The first leg starts this morning in Old Lyme and travels through East Lyme, Waterford, New London, Groton, Stonington, North Stonington and Ledyard. The second leg travels through towns that include Norwich and Montville.
