New London – A report of a man with a gun led to a foot chase and later a search for the gun near at a housing complex off Colman Street on Friday.
Shortly after 2 p.m., police responded to a report of a man with a gun tucked into his waistband walking in the area of Colman Street and Laurel Drive. Police said a man fitting the description fled when he was spotted by a responding officer.
The man, later identified as 24-year-old Raashid Cox of 365 Jefferson Ave., was known to have a previous weapon conviction and is disqualified from carrying a handgun, according to Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard. Police caught up with an apprehended Cox after a chase through several yards in the Colman Street and Laurel Drive area.
Patrol officers, detectives and a K9 team could be seen searching the grounds of a housing complex at Fern and Colman streets at about 2:30 p.m. Police called in the fire department and used their ladder truck to access the roofs of several of the homes.
Reichard said a gun was never found. Cox was charged with interfering with an officer and third-degree trespass.
Police said the investigation continues.
