Preston Board of Finance sets 2014-15 tax rate

Preston – The Board of Finance Thursday set the 2014-15 tax rate at 23.14 mills, down slightly from this year's 23.7 mills.

The agency discussed whether to reduce the $500,000 to be taken from the town's surplus fund to reduce taxes. First Selectman Robert Congdon had recommended reducing the amount taken from surplus in anticipation of a difficult state budget year next year.

Finance board Chairman Jerry Grabarek said a vote to cut the surplus amount to $400,000 failed in a 3-3 vote.
