Norwich — Three occupants of a rental box truck escaped injury Tuesday after crashing into the guard rails and a bridge abutment before rolling onto its side off the eastbound side of Route 2.
The crash occurred at 10:46 a.m. when a Ryder truck driven by 22-year-old Brian Borowiec, of Ludlow, Mass., veered across the left lane, into the left shoulder and struck a metal guard rail, state police said. The truck continued along the guard rail for about 150 feet and into a concrete bridge pillar under the Route 32 overpass, in the area prior to Exit 27.
The truck landed on its left side with contents of the truck, along with a fuel spill, in the roadway.
State police were joined at the scene by Yantic Fire Department, and at least one lane of Route 2 was closed for several hours while the crash scene was cleared.
