3 hospitalized following deck collapse in Ledyard

Ledyard – Three women were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon when a deck collapsed at a home at 31 Robin Hood Drive in the Gales Ferry section of town.

The collapse occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Firefighters from the Gales Ferry Fire Department were joined at the scene by personnel from the Ledyard and Naval Submarine Base fire departments.

Gales Ferry Fire Chief Tony Saccone said the deck “completely collapsed,” seriously injuring one woman and injuring two others on the deck at the time. He said the deck was 12 to 15 feet high. The woman were thrown to the ground and not entrapped in the debris, he said.

All three patients, with non-life threatening injuries, were taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Saccone said the town police and an official from the building department were called in to investigate.
