EAST LYME VOTERS TO CONSIDER FUNDS FOR EQUIPMENT, LAND

East Lyme - The town will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Town Hall for residents to vote on two appropriations.

Residents will vote first on appropriating $205,045, payable in annual installments over 5 years, for breathing-apparatus equipment for firefighters, specifically the 4.5 model of Scott Air Paks, bottles and masks.

The appropriation will allow the town to acquire 30 air packs that will be compatible with other fire departments, according to a presentation at a Board of Selectmen meeting earlier this month. The Niantic Fire Department uses a model of equipment that is no longer used by other departments, according to the presentation.

Next, residents will consider a special appropriation of $25,000 to help purchase the Bayreuther Property, an approximately 40-acre parcel in the Oswegatchie Hills, for open space.

Funding from the state, a local nonprofit organization and a private foundation will complete the $300,000 purchase of the undeveloped property with frontage on Quarry Dock Road. A state grant will contribute $100,000, and the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills will contribute $25,000.

A private foundation, The Thompson Family Foundation, has pledged a $150,000 donation.

The Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills would hold the conservation on the Bayreuther Property.
