Portion of Rocky Neck closed to swimming

East Lyme — The East Beach of Rocky Neck State Park was closed to swimming Tuesday because of possible contamination of bacteria, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The notice of the closure was included in a water quality report issued by the DEEP. The DEEP collects water samples weekly from state swimming areas to be analyzed at the Department of Public Health lab.

“Samples are analyzed for indicator bacteria, which are not disease causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection officials to evaluate the potential contamination of waterbodies,” according to the DEEP website.

The report indicates a resample of the water was taken on Tuesday with results expected today.

    The park remains open.
