Waterford - A driver at the Waterford Speedbowl was injured Saturday night when his car caught fire shortly after a race.
Emergency workers and bystanders helped get driver Doug Cleveland, of Sudbury, Mass., out of his car, said Brian Darling, media relations director for the Speedbowl.
Cars were leaving the track to go to the pit area at about 8:30 p.m. when one of the cars, a NEMA Midget, caught on fire, Darling said.
Drivers have many safety belts to take off, he explained.
“When onlookers saw what was going on, they aided the emergency team there to get him out,” Darling said.
Cleveland was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
