Groton — Town Police are warning residents of a continuing IRS telephone scam going on in the area.

Over the past few days, police say they we have received multiple calls from residents who received calls by a person identifying themselves as an IRS officer.

The caller attempted to obtain personal information such as the residents’ birth date, address, social security number, employer information, banking information and credit card numbers.

The caller ID usually displays a 202 area code, which is the Washington DC area. In some instances, the caller ID displays the wording IRS.

Police say this is a scam and to not give the caller any personal information and to not trust any phone numbers given out by the caller. Police suggest hanging up and calling local police.
