    H.S. Football / Week 6 preview capsules

Chase Speller of Waterford (4) attempts to cut back as Justin Carter of Ledyard defends during last Friday night's Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division football game at Ledyard.

    Today's games

    Bacon at Waterford, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Bacon (2-3, 1-2 ECC Medium); Waterford (1-4, 1-2)

Last week: Bacon defeated Killingly 35-28; Waterford lost to Ledyard 55-13

Outlook: Bacon rebounded nicely from a defeat at Ledyard with a division win against Killingly. Quarterback Sean Kelly moved to second in the state in passing yards with 1,188 thus far. Waterford's defense has been a question all season, yielding a 206 points, the second-most in the ECC. Bacon isn't far behind at 203. Chances are this is a high scoring game.

New London at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

Records: New London (4-1, 0-0 ECC Large); East Lyme (2-3, 1-1)

Last week: New London defeated Woodstock 51-6; East Lyme defeated St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 61-20

Outlook: New London has won two straight and has looked impressive doing so. Senior Jelani Lucas has four touchdowns in the last two games and quarterback Danny Maranda can eclipse 1,000 passing yards for the season in this game. He has 967. ... East Lyme has won two straight over Fitch and St. Bernard/Norwich Tech, but steps up several classes here.

    Ledyard at Montville, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Ledyard (5-0, 3-0 ECC Medium); Montville (4-1, 3-0)

Last week: Ledyard defeated Waterford 55-13; Montville defeated Stonington 22-21

Outlook: The winner of this game captures the Medium Division title. Montville has won four straight, including last week's victory on the last play, denying Stonington a two-point conversion. ... Ledyard quarterback Ty Ebdon has thrown for 1,139 yards thus far, good enough for fifth in the state. Montville's defense must also contend with running back JoJo Shumaker, who has rushed for 712 yards in five games. This begins a stretch for Ledyard that features Montville, unbeaten Windham and one-loss New London in the next few weeks.

    Stonington at Killingly, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Stonington (2-3, 0-2 ECC Medium); Killingly (1-4, 0-2)

Last week: Stonington lost to Montville 22-21; Killingly lost to Bacon Academy 35-28

Outlook: Two ornery teams here. The Bears have lost three straight, including last week's heartbreaker to Montville. Killingly fell behind early against Bacon and rallied, falling just short. The Redmen have lost two straight since defeating Fitch late last month. The winner of this game at least gets to say it snapped a losing streak.

    Gilbert/NW Regional at Valley/Old Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Gilbert/NW Regional (4-1, 4-1 Pequot Uncas); Valley/Old Lyme (5-0, 5-0 Pequot Sassacus)

Last week: Gilbert/NW Regional defeated East Windsor/Stafford 35-0; Valley/Old Lyme defeated Cromwell 44-0

Outlook: Gilbert/Northwestern Regional is tied for second place in the Pequot Uncas. The Warriors are tied with Coginchaug atop the Pequot Sassacus. ... Chris Jean-Pierre ran 15 times for 190 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 88 yards in last week's win for Valley/Old Lyme.

Wolcott Tech at St. Bernard/Norwich Tech, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Wolcott Tech (0-4); St. Bernard/Norwich Tech (0-4)

Last week: Wolcott Tech lost to Cheney Tech 36-13; St. Bernard/Norwich Tech lost to East Lyme 61-20

Outlook: It's hard to imagine two programs in the state are struggling worse. Wolcott Tech has scored 59 points this year in four games, allowing 189. St. Bernard/Norwich Tech has scored 48 and allowed 198. Both have a great opportunity for their first win.

    Saturday's Game

    Fitch at NFA, 1 p.m.

    Records: Fitch (0-5, 0-1 ECC Large); NFA (2-2, 1-0)

Last week: Fitch lost to Windham 47-8; NFA lost to Griswold 27-24

Outlook: As badly as it's been for NFA the last two weeks - two straight losses - the Wildcats actually lead the ECC Large Division and can move to 2-0 here. Fitch has struggled all season, allowing a league-worst 215 points.
