End comes all too suddenly for Conn women's soccer

Montclair, N.J. - Sunday's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship second-round game took a heart-breaking turn for Connecticut College.

On the verge of heading to a penalty kick shootout to decide the outcome of the scoreless double-overtime game, Conn watched Montclair State University senior Kaila Fasano deliver a devastating game-winning strike with 51 seconds remaining.

In a flash, Conn's remarkable run ended with a 1-0 loss.

"We're a little heart-broken," said Conn coach Norm Riker during a phone conversation. "It was a late goal. … Just like that you go from an incredible run and an incredible season to it being over."

No. 8 Montclair came in as the favorite, riding a 20-game unbeaten streak. The Red Hawks hadn't lost since their season opener on Aug. 29 and allowed just five goals all season.

But the 17th-ranked Camels played their share of tough customers in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, so they came in battle-tested.

The game remained scoreless through regulation and nearly two full overtimes because of Conn's stout defense, led by sophomore goalie Bryanna Montalvo.

For the second straight NCAA game, Montalvo was at her sparkling best. She stopped 10 shots, repeatedly frustrating the Red Hawks (19-1-2), who held a 21-7 edge in shots.

"She's really been a brick wall," Riker said. "She made some great saves to keep it 0-0."

Conn forced senior goalie Gina Policastro to make just one save, increasing her program-record shutout total to 16 this season.

In the second half, the Camels created some good scoring opportunities but couldn't produce quality shots.

The game almost ended late in regulation, but an offsides call negated a Montclair State goal.

Overtime belonged to the Red Hawks, who fired five more shots at Montalvo before one slipped past. It was Fasano's second straight game-winner and team-leading 15th goal overall this season. She had the only goal in a 1-0 shutout of Lesley University in first-round action on Saturday.

"They played very direct, so they knocked the ball over the top late and their best player ended up with the ball at her feet," Riker said. "She had a slight breakaway. She took it and scored it."

Conn had too little time to respond.

The Camels (16-3-1) accomplished so much this season, setting a program record for wins, capturing the school's first NESCAC championship and appearing in the NCAA for the first time since 1998. They beat Swarthmore 3-1 in first-round action Saturday.

The program's future is blindly bright.

The Camels lose only three seniors in Astrid Kempainen, Rebecca Raymond and Grace Bilodeau, all valuable contributors and team leaders.

"There's a lot to build on," Riker said. "You can't replace heart and leadership, that's what our three seniors gave us. Right now, we're just going to embrace the great season we had."
