Student brings bullet to Quaker Hill Elementary

Waterford – A fourth-grade student brought a bullet and a piece of a pellet gun to Quaker Hill Elementary School Thursday morning, according to message released to Quaker Hill parents.

Principal Chris Discordia stated in a message sent by voice and text over the district’s “school messenger” system Thursday that he confiscated the items and brought the student to his office.

“I wanted you to know that at no time was any child in danger. Additionally, if you deem it to be appropriate, have a conversation with your children about how everyone has a responsibility in keeping one another safe,” the message stated.

Superintendent Jerome Belair described the incident during a Board of Education meeting Thursday. He said after the meeting the district was taking the incident seriously.

Belair said Discordia met with the parents of the student and visited each fourth grade class to discuss the incident with students. He said Discordia also sent fourth grade students home with a note to parents.

Belair said the student will be disciplined appropriately, and that he could not release more details about the student or how he will be disciplined.

The superintendent described Discordia’s approach to the situation as masterful. He said the principal had noticed “something suspicious” during morning recess. The principal approached the student at that time and was able to confiscate the bullet and five-inch metal piece of a pellet gun without many other students noticing what was happening, according to Belair.

Police did not take any action, Waterford Police Lt. Stephen Bellos wrote in an email.
