    First step perfect for Valley/OL

Haddam-Killingworth quarterback Alex Segaline (7) can't escape the Cheverier brothers - Tyler (79) and Justin, center - of Valley Regional/Old Lyme and is sacked during Tuesday night's game. The Warriors completed a perfect 11-0 regular season with a 49-7 victory.

Deep River - Evan Smith put the "jet" in Valley Regional/Old Lyme's jet sweep on Tuesday night.

Smith had nine touches and scored three times as the Warriors thumped old friend Haddam-Killingworth, 49-7, to win the Principal's Cup and finish unbeaten for the second straight season.

"He opens up the whole game for us," Valley/Old Lyme quarterback Chris Jean-Pierre said of his classmate. "Without Ev running and doing the things that he's doing, we wouldn't be able to run up the middle and stuff like that."

The Warriors (11-0, 9-0) finished the regular season as the Pequot Football Conference's only unbeaten team and as Sassacus Division champions.

Valley/Old Lyme will also be the top seed in the CIAC Class S-Large Division tournament and will play host to a semifinal on Saturday, Dec. 6 against a team to be determined.

Not too shabby for a program that never made states until 2010.

Valley/Old Lyme has run the jet sweep more than past seasons because of Smith's speed. He runs the 100 and 200 meters, the 300 hurdles and is on the Warriors' 4x100 relay team in track and field. He won the Shoreline Conference 300 hurdles title in the spring.

"I just started doing that last year," Smith said.

Smith ran six times for 95 yards and two touchdowns on Tuesday night. He also caught two passes for 51 yards and a score.

Smith also froze the Cougars twice going in motion with Jean-Pierre faking the handoff. That allowed Andrew Tuscano to get open for touchdown catches of 32 and 34 yards.

"We've got a couple of kids that can run it," Valley/Old Lyme coach Tim King said. "He's had great games for us all the way up to Coginchaug (a 56-6 win on Oct. 25). … He's kind of been in the shadow of and Chris.

"Tonight, he finally got back and we need him to be that way. He's a state sprinter, so he's got the speed. Having (running back) Justin (Cheverier) out there blocking, he's kind of a beast, so that helps."

Justin Burgess, Tajhay Marshall, Jared Roche and Cheverier each had a sack for the Warriors.

Christian Marraquin, Cheverier and Cheverier each had fumble recoveries and Daniel Figuenick had an interception.

H-K (4-7, 3-6) scored with over five minutes left in the first half to tie the game at 7.

It took Valley/Old Lyme seven plays to go 66 yards. Smith completed the drive by running the jet sweep left for a 27-yard touchdown.

The Warriors forced the Cougars to go three-and-out on their next series.

Jean-Pierre fielded the punt at his own 46 and took it all the way to the H-K 9, aided by a chest-caving block by Cheverier.

Marshall, an offensive lineman, ran for a 5-yard touchdown to push the Warriors' lead to 21-7.

Valley/Old Lyme scored 28 in the third quarter.

"It's sad that the regular season is over, but our mission isn't over yet," Jean-Pierre said. "We want to get the championship and get that ring. That's our ultimate goal."
