UConn women return from exam break to face DePaul in Bridgeport

It's been 13 days since UConn played its best game of the young season, knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame 76-58 in an early-season matchup of women's basketball powers.

Today, as the Huskies return from their final exam break, they will go from battling an old nemesis to playing an old friend - DePaul and veteran coach Doug Bruno.

Bruno, an assistant under coach Geno Auriemma on USA Basketball team and one of Auriemma's closest friends, brings his 25th-ranked Blue Demons to Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena to face UConn (7:30 p.m., SNY), which has since replaced the Fighting Irish as the No. 2 in the national rankings behind unbeaten South Carolina.

DePaul (6-2) is coming off a 109-84 victory over Loyola of Chicago on Wednesday. In that game, the Blue Demons tied a school single-game record by making 16 3-pointers and had six players reach double figures, including a game-high 25 by 5-foot-7 guard Jessica January. The also gave Notre Dame a battle four days after the Irish lost to UConn, taking Notre Dame into overtime before losing 94-93.

DePaul, the preseason favorite to win the Big East Conference, is averaging 91.2 points per game but has lost 11 straight games to the Huskies.

UConn, meanwhile, averages 89.3 points per game, so this has the makings of an up-and-down night.

The Huskies (6-1) have four staters averaging in double figures - Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (17.0), Brianna Stewart (16.4), Morgan Tuck (14.3) and freshman Kia Nurse (13.6) - while point guard Moriah Jefferson is close behind at 9.6.

But a real strength during the first two months of the season has been UConn's bench play as 6-foot-3 center Kiah Stokes has averaged 6.1 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds, sophomore Saniya Chong is averaging 7.1 points and freshman Gabby Williams is averaging 7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing just a little over 14 minutes per game.

Following tonight's game, UConn will play its first regular-season game in program history at the Mohegan Sun Arena whey they face UCLA in the Hall of Fame Women's Challenge at 5 p.m. That game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
