Firefighters rescue teen in icy pond at Connecticut College's Arboretum

New London firefighters rescue three boys from the center of the pond at the Connecticut College Arboretum Friday, Jan. 2, 2015. Crews from Waterford and the Navy Submarine Base fire departments responded as well.

New London — Firefighters made a rescue at an icy pond at Connecticut College’s arboretum Friday afternoon, pulling to safety a teenager who fell through the ice.

Three teens had ventured out Friday afternoon onto the water’s icy surface to reach a rock near the center of the pond. One teen, a boy, fell into the water through broken ice before reaching the rock, said New London Fire Department Lt. Rocco Basilica.

Four members of the fire department in cold-water rescue suits pulled the teenager, as well as the two others who had reached the rock, to safety on shore through an inflatable rescue boat.

The boy was taken to Lawrence + Memorial hospital by ambulance to be treated for exposure to the cold water.

New London firefighters, along with mutual aid from Waterford firefighters, responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m. Friday. New London police and fire departments blocked off part of Williams Street near the arboretum’s entrance during the incident.

Two firefighters were treated for exposure to the cold water but did not need to go to the hospital, said New London fire Chief Henry Kydd.

Kydd said the whole department responded to the emergency quickly and with the proper equipment. He said he is very proud of the department.
