    Around the region

    • Providence College guard Kris Dunn is finally healthy again. And he's living up to his potential.

    Dunn, a McDonald's All-American out of New London High School, earned the first Big East Conference Player of the Week honor of his career on Monday. He averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds in two wins last week, including a career-high 25 points in a 66-62 win at Butler on Jan. 6.

    He leads the conference in assists and steals. The Friars are 13-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference.

    • UConn forward Gabby Williams was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season while junior Moriah Jefferson made the conference honor roll. Williams averaged 13.5 points in two wins for the women's basketball team and grabbed 16 rebounds against SMU on Sunday on the way to her first career double-double.

    For the men, senior Ryan Boatright earned a spot on the AAC honor roll.

    • Competing in their first collegiate track and field meet, Waterford's Savonnah Artis and Norwich Free Academy graduate Taylor Driggers both broke nine-year-old Eastern Connecticut State University program records at the Yale Collegiate Invitational last weekend. Artis set the record in the 60 meters with a time of 8.22 seconds and Driggers hit her mark in the triple jump in 35 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Artis was named the Little East Conference Rookie Track Athlete of the Week while Driggers received the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week award.

    Junior Lee Cattanach of New London also topped his own record in the mile with a time of 4:23.51 and finished ninth overall. It is the eighth best time in Division III. For his accomplishment, he was named Little East Male Track Athlete of the Week.

    • St. Michael's College freshman Zach Kosakowski of East Lyme competed in the 400-yard medley relay and raced in two individual events in a swim meet against Bentley College. He placed third in the 500 and 200 backstroke races. In a meet against Saint Rose, he swam on the winning 400 medley relay team.

    • East Lyme's Irving Eggleston is playing a starring role for the Nichols College men's basketball team. He was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career after averaging 23 points, three rebounds and 2.3 assists in three victories. Eggleston, a junior captain, leads the team in scoring at 18.2 points per game. The Bison reside in first place in the conference at 6-0.

    "Irv has established himself as one of the top guards in the conference," coach Tom Glynn said in a released statement. "His play and leadership are major reasons why we are off to a program-record 6-0 start in the CCC."

    • Stonington graduate Falecia Cabral is one of the top scorers for Cuesta College, a junior college in San Luis Obispo, Calif. A freshman forward, she has led the women's basketball team in scoring seven times and tied for the lead twice.

    • Bentley College freshman Aidan Karam of Norwich placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:04.99) and third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:36.15) in a college swim meet against Keene State College on Sunday.

    Camel highlights

    • Connecticut College junior goalie Tom Conlin was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men's hockey. He posted a 1.08 goals-against-average and stopped 92 of 95 shots in three games. He earned MVP honors while leading the Camels to the championship of the 50th Annual Codfish Bowl at UMass-Boston last week.

    "He has given the team the chance to win in almost every game this season," said coach Jim Ward in a released statement.

    The Camels are 4-5-2 overall, 2-3-1 in the NESCAC.

    • The women's hockey team is off to a strong start, going 8-2-3 overall, 3-1-2 in the conference. Freshman forward Kate Kohl has a team-best 10 points with five goals and five assists. The Camels host Colby College on Friday in NESCAC action.

    • Freshman Lee Messier averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in his first two conference games for the men's basketball team. Sophomore Zuri Pavlin is second in the NESCAC in rebounds at 10.5 per game. Conn is 7-6 overall, 0-2 in the conference.

    • The women's basketball team already has racked up 11 wins overall. Freshman forward Mairead Hynes is making a big impact in her first season, averaging 16.3 points and 10.1 rebounds for the Camels, 1-1 in the conference.
