    New London nips Ledyard 72-70 to remain unbeaten

    Ledyard — C.J. Parker converted a Collin Sawyer pass into the game-winning basket with 1.2 seconds remaining as New London High School remained unbeaten with a wild 72-70 boys’ basketball victory over Ledyard on Thursday night before an overflow crowd at Standish Gymnasium.

    The Whalers (10-0), ranked No. 4 in the latest New Haven Register state poll, inbounded the ball to Sawyer (18 points) with nine seconds left and the senior was able to penetrate and pass the ball to Parker for an easy layup.

    Ledyard (8-2), which trailed 70-66 late, had tied the game on a pair of baskets by point guard DeAnte Bruton, the second shot a running drive with nine seconds remaining.
