    Yanks' Girardi to appear at Foundation dinner

    Mohegan - New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi will appear at the Connecticut Sports Foundation's 28th Annual Celebrity Dinner and Memorabilia Auction on Friday, Feb. 6 at Mohegan Sun.

    Also in attendance will be former Yankees Bernie Williams, Paul O'Neill and David Cone, along with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, longtime Yankees executive Gene Michael and Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

    WFAN radio personality Mike Francesca will serve as master of ceremonies for the dinner, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at the casino's convention center.

    The Connecticut Sports Foundation, based in Old Saybrook, was founded in 1987 by New London native John Ellis, a former major league catcher and a cancer survivor. The Sports Foundation's mission is to financially assist Connecticut's cancer patients and their families and to fund cancer research.

    The foundation has granted more than $3.5 million to over 4,000 families with financial hardships related to a cancer diagnosis and has donated more than $1.5 million to support cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

    • Waterford improved to 15-8 by sweeping a home quad meet on Friday night. The Lancers defeated Westerly (45-36), Coventry (57-21) and Coventry, R.I. (48-33). Sam Lindblom (138), Dillon McCarthy (170), Justin Keating (182), Ben Pickowitz (195) and Cody Cleary (220) each went 3-0 for Waterford.
