A look at year-by-year federal budgets

President Barack Obama today sent Congress his proposed budget. His budget proposes spending $4 trillion in the 2016 fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. The budget looks to decrease the deficit from an estimated $582.5 billion in fiscal year 2015 to $474.3 billion at the end of fiscal year 2016.
Below we look at the federal budget (receipts, outlays, and surplus/deficit) from 1940 to 2020 (estimated). Data was taken from the Office of Management and Budget.
