    Local colleges: CGA women win 11th straight

    New London —The Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team extended its school record winning streak to 11 straight with a 58-55 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

    Junior Meghan Fornaro scored 11 of her 12 points in the second half to help the Bears (18-7, 12-4 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference) overcome a 20-point deficit.

    Freshman Gil Gerton had 11 points off the bench while senior Alexi Howland, who pushed CGA in front for good with two free throws with 17.2 seconds left, had 10 points and junior Torie Sutherland added eight points and team-high 14 rebounds.

    The two teams will meet again in the NEWMAC tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday in New London at 7 p.m. Coast Guard is the third seed while MIT is No. 6.

    In other games:

    • Jessica Shepherd scored a game-high 21 points, leading Mitchell College to its fourth straight win, beating Becker College, 61-48, in the New England Collegiate Conference. Amanda Garcia had 10 points and a game-high 21 rebounds and Savannah Boyle had 14 points for the Mariners (12-12, 12-6), who host Wheelock College on Tuesday night in their NECC tournament opener.

    • Fifth-seeded Connecticut College couldn't hold on after taking a 10-point halftime lead, losing to fourth-seeded Williams, 45-44, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal. Mairead Hynes had 17 points and 13 rebounds while reserve Willa McKinley added 14 points for the Camels (16-9), who shot just 27.5 percent from the field and scored just 14 points after intermission.

    • Avery Point has qualified for the NJCAA Region 21 tournament and will host Quinsigamond Community College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

    Men's basketball

    • Coast Guard ended its season on a sour note, losing to Springfield, 73-51, on Senior Day. Junior Kevin Alvarez had 15 points and senior David Anderson added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears (6-19, 2-12 NEWMAC).

    • Mitchell saw its winning streak end at four and lost an opportunity to host a NECC tournament game with a 93-86 loss at Becker. The Mariners (12-12, 9-7) led by as many as 10 points before the Hawks (15-10, 10-6) rallied. Senior Parris Hill had 25 points and 10 rebounds while junior Donavan McClean had 16 points and senior Joshua Ford added nine points and 10 rebounds. Becker hosts Mitchell on Tuesday in NECC tournament.

    • Keith Porter of UConn-Avery Point was named the NJCAA Div. III Player of the Week. Porter, the former New London High School standout, averaged 33.6 points in three games. He's averaging 29 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game this season.

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College scored three first-period goals and went on to beat Colby, 4-1, in the NESCAC. Joe Giordano scored twice and Marc Roper and Adam Patel also scored for the Camels (13-9-2, 10-7-1), who will host a conference tournament quarterfinal next Saturday.

    Men's indoor track

    • Joe Kelly and Matt Navetta were the top individual performers for Coast Guard at the New England Division III Meet at Springfield. Kelly placed third in the 600 meters (1:22) while Navetta was third in the pole vault (14 feet, 3.25 inches). Andrew Scheffey also earned All-New England honors by taking eighth in the 800 (1:58.23). The Bears placed ninth overall with 34 points. MIT won the team title. All three Coast Guard relay team placed in the top eight and achieved All-New England status. The 4x400 team of James Dawkins, Kelly, Rae Pennny and Ben Hannon took second in 3:24.66. The 4x800 team of Ryan Hub, Ben Chapman, Brett Foster and Andrew Ireland placed fifth (7:59.05), and the distance medley quartet of Caleb Teachout, Kelcey Smith, Will Klein and Gilliam Hill finished sixth (10:36.32). Hannon also was seventh in the 200 meters in a season best 22.95.

    Connor Trapp, Brad DeMarco, Billy Barnes and Ben Bosworth placed fourth in the 4x800 at the and set a Conn College indoor school record (7:58.12). The Camels finished 16th (15). Patrick Dermody finished fourth in the 5,000 (14:57.13) and Bosworth placed fourth in the 3,000 (8:29.29) for Conn.

    Ashley Curran placed third in the 5,000 (17:27.89) at the meet as Conn finished 19th (13 points). Bella Franz was fifth in the 800 (2:17.22) for Conn and Kim Bolick took eighth in the one-mile run (5:03.73). Also, Haley Sykes, Leah Sabatino, Bolick and Franz were eighth in the 4x800 (9:46.83) and Anna Guay, Emily Shafer, Sabina Flandrick, and Grace Sheeran placed eighth in the distance medley relay (13:37.83).

    Women's track

    • Beth Gollin and Monet Masters earned All-New England honors at the New England Division III Meet. Gollin placed eighth in the 3,000 (10:30.90) and Masters took eighth in the pole vault (10-11.75). The Bears finished 28th in the team scoring. MIT won the team title. Coast Guard's distance medley relay team of Ashlee Johnson, Madison Ahlers, Chloe Benoist and Bonny Turnage finished seventh and earned All-New England status.

    Women's hockey

    • Williams earned a split of the weekend series with Conn College as Kearan Burke scored a first period goal in a 1-0 decision in the NESCAC. Goalie Kelsie Fralick had 24 saves for the Camels (12-9-3, 7-7-2). On Friday, Ashley Anctil scored twice for Conn in a 4-2 win.

    College baseball

    • UConn pounded out 16 hits in a 12-4 win over Siena in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Vinny Siena had three hits and Joe DeRoche-Duffin added three RBI while Fitch graduate Aaron Hill had a single and scored twice for the Huskies (1-3). Carson Cross was the winning pitcher.
