    Local roundup: St. Bernard boys win ECC tourney opener in OT

    Montville - John Vogt banked home a short jumper with five seconds left in overtime to give seventh-seeded St. Bernard School a 61-60 victory over No. 10 Plainfield in the playdown round of the Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' basketball tournament Thursday night.

    The Saints (15-6) will play No. 2 Ledyard in Saturday's quarterfinal round at Fitch High School at 4 p.m.

    St. Bernard, which forced overtime at 57-57 on Remy Bonser's 3-pointer (he surpassed 1,000 career points on the shot) with just under a minute left in regulation, trailed 60-57 late in overtime when Graham Fagerquist made a pair of free throws to pull the Saints with 60-59, setting up Vogt's late-game dramatics.

    Bonser finished with 25 points, including six 3-pointes, to lead St. Bernard and Vogt added 13.

    In other playdown games:

    • Eddie Volkerts had 27 points, 18 rebounds and 11 steals as No. 6 Fitch downed No. 11 Wheeler, 77-36. The Falcons outscored Wheeler in the first quarter, 26-5.

    John Floyd had 23 points, 15 rebounds and six steals for Fitch (13-7), which will play No. 3 Waterford in Saturday's quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Max Dussalt scored nine from the Lions (10-11).

    • Brandon Drabinski had 18 points and Isaiah Joyner scored 10 as No. 8 NFA beat No. 9 Griswold, 71-35. The Wildcats (10-11) advance to play top-seeded New London in Saturday's quarterfinals at noon. Jordan Baker scored 11 for the Wolverines (11-10).

    Sun sign Pedersen, Brewer

    • The Connecticut Sun signed centers Kayla Pedersen and Alyssia Brewer on Thursday. Terms were not released as per team policy.

    Pedersen, 6-foot-4, averaged 10 minutes last season in 31 games for the Sun last season, one of which she started.

    Brewer (6-3) averaged 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds during her senior season at UCAL in 2012-13. She has been invited to the Los Angeles Sparks' training camp the past two seasons and was waived both times.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Old Lyme girls' basketball coach Don Bugbee was named Shoreline Conference Coach of the Year. The Wildcats, who will play Gilbert in a first-round Class S state tournament game Monday, are 16-6 overall, including a berth in the Shoreline tournament semifinals. In addition, Old Lyme's Abby Stone was named to the league's second team and Julia Strycharz earned honorable mention honors.

    College swimming

    • Connecticut College qualified two relay teams for the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Championships March 18-21 in Shenandoah, Texas.

    For the women, freshmen Sarah Nappo and Charlotte Nixon, sophomore Anna Peterson and junior All-American Sam Pierce will compete in the 200-yard medley relay team. In the men's field, sophomore All-American Mike Fothergill, senior All-American Kirk Czelewicz, junior All-American Loring Bowen and freshman George Tilneac qualified in the 400 medley relay. It is the second straight year that the Camels will be well-represented at the national meet. Last season they sent a school-best 11 athletes, finishing 12th in the men's competition and 16th in the women's meet.
