    High school roundup: NFA's Churchill wins state title on uneven bars

    New Milford - Norwich Free Academy's Taylor Churchill won an individual title on the uneven bars and finished third in the all-around at Saturday's State Open gymnastics championships at New Milford High School.

    Churchill, a sophomore, scored 9.60 points on bars to win the state title and had an all-around total of 36.975 to finish behind a pair of Woodstock Academy gymnasts, Paige Stuyniski (38.7) and Grace Logan (37.625). Woodstock successfully defended its State Open team title with 148.3 points, nearly eight better than runnerup Southington (140.325).

    Churchill added a fourths in the floor exercise (9.475) and vault (9.45) for the Wildcats while tying for 25th on the balance beam (8.45).

    Montville's Morgan Staehle competed in three events, tying for 24th on vault (8.825), placing 31st in the floor exercise (8.8) and 34th on the bars (7.95).

    Wrestling

    • Three local wrestlers earned medals at the New England tournament in North Andover, Mass. NFA's Matt Foster (113 pounds) placed fifth while Montville's Tommy Wynosky (132) and NFA's Khaleed Exum-Strong (220) each finished sixth. Foster began the day losing his quarterfinal match to Matt Garcia of Springfield Central (Mass.), 6-1. He won a pair of consolation matches over Chris DeRosa of Billerica (Mass.) 11-9 and Colby Holland of Danvers (Mass.) 5-0, before being pinned in 1:33 by Alec Opsal of New Fairfield in the consolation semifinals. He avenged his loss to Garcia in the 5th-6th consolation final with an 11-4 win.

    Exum-Strong lost his quarterfinal match to eventual champion Ian Butterbrodt of St. John's Prep (Mass.) 3-0. He won consolation matches over Kenny Kern of Xaverian (Mass.) 4-3 and Salvatore DeSantis of Chariho (R.I.) 7-6, but was pinned in 2:20 by Tyler Fenwick of Mt. Hope (R.I.) in the consolation semis before losing in the 5th-6th final to Nick Rose of Arlington (Mass.) 9-8. Wynosky won three straight matches in the consolation bracket by defeating Tyson Cram of Otter Valley (N.H.) 12-0 and pinning Zach Bylykbashi of Southington in 2:27 and Russell Feye of Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.) in 1:00, but he lost his consolation semi to Jon Ryan of Dracut (Mass.) 10-5 and then dropped a 10-8 decision to Josh Wesolowski of Pentucket (Mass.) in the 5th-6th final.

    Three other local wrestlers also competed in the consolation bracket. New London's Alejandro Paulino (126) beat Dan Pisani of Franklin (Mass.) 9-2 and Cameron Bennett of Nashua North (N.H.) 10-5 before losing to Andrew Ellis of Arlington (Mass.) 10-1 in the quarterfinals. Waterford's Sam Lindblom (138), who was pinned in 2:53 by Chris Behen of Danvers (Mass.) in the first round of the championship bracket on Friday night, came back to defeat Lucas Cordio of Nashoba (Mass.) 11-8 and Bryce Bernadine of Mt. Mansfield (Vt.) 10-0 before losing to Danny Scalzo of Timberlane (N.H.) 5-3 in the quarters. Ledyard's Daric Johnson (220) lost Kern, 7-3.

    Mt. Anthony (Vt.) won the team title with 122.5 points while Newtown finished second (84) and Fairfield Warde third (69). Ten Connecticut wrestlers make it to the finals, but only Southington's Zach Murillo (106), Warde's Charles Kane (138) and Danbury's Juan Garcia (182) won titles.

    Hockey

    • The NFA/St. Bernard/Bacon/Stonington/Lyman Memorial cooperative team (11-9) earned the No. 10 seed for the CIAC Division III tournament and will visit No. 7 Sheehan (12-8) in the first round on Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Choate School in Wallingford. The Eastern Connecticut Eagles (4-15) were seeded 15th and will play No. 2 Masuk (16-3-1) on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at The Rinks at Shelton.
