    Local roundup: Coast Guard's Duncan gets deciding hit in a slugfest

    Kingston, R.I. — Sophomore Tim Duncan's RBI single during a three-run outburst in the sixth inning broke an 8-8 tie, lifting Coast Guard Academy past Babson 11-10 Tuesday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball game played at the University of Rhode Island.

    Coast Guard improved to 7-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

    Freshman Cody Bain pitched in and out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to pick up his team-leading third save of the season. Freshman Joe Siciliano (2-0) earned the win, pitching three innings.

    Blake Thompson, Brendan McNeil, Duncan and Ed Lazowski each had two hits for the Bears.

    In other games:

    • Fitch High School graduate Aaron Hill went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, helping UConn roll past Yale 18-1. The Huskies (14-8) finished with a season-high 18 hits. Vinny Siena had four hits and three RBI while extending his hitting streak to 13 and Willy Yahn added three hits and four RBI. Andrew Zapata earned the win, allowing one run in five innings with a career-high six strikeouts.

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard Academy didn't drop a set in a 9-0 sweep of rival Merchant Marine. Mark Guentert, Robert Renfrow, Weston Fortna, Michael Melampy, John Hu and Benson Errington all won their singles matches. Guentert and Fortna combined for a win at No. 1 doubles while the duos of Melampy and Errington and Renfrow and Hu also were victorious for the Bears (3-2).

    Men's lacrosse

    • Senior Briggs Barton scored five goals and goalie Bobby Bleistein had 17 saves in Connecticut College's 11-7 victory over Babson College. Ross Thompson added a goal and an assist for the Camels (2-6).

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • CIAC Class S champion Sacred Heart was a unanimous No. 1 pick in the final New Haven Register Top 10 poll of the season. The Hearts (28-0) received all 18 first-place votes and were the top-ranked team all season. They trounced Valley Regional on Sunday 71-46 to win their second straight title. Eastern Connecticut Conference champion New London (23-1) was 10th. Ledyard (21-5) and Waterford (19-6) also received votes.
