    Local roundup: CGA rallies in ninth for key 4-3 baseball win over Clark

    New London — Coast Guard Academy rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Clark University 4-3 on Friday to kick off a pivotal three-game baseball series in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

    The two teams are fighting for a conference tournament berth.

    In the ninth, Tim Duncan's RBI single tied the game and Clark pitcher Brett O'Keefe hit Brendan McNeil of Pawcatuck with a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run. Duncan finished 3-for-5, including his team-leading fifth home run this season and Blake Thompson went 3-for-3.

    Winning pitcher Colton Cannon (2-2) threw a complete game, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking six. He gave up just one hit over the final seven innings.

    The Bears improved to 13-10, 6-8 in the NEWMAC, while Clark fell to 8-13, 5-6.

    The two teams play a doubleheader today at Clark in Worcester, Mass.

    In other college games:

    • UConn fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and never recovered, dropping a 7-3 decision to East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference. Staff ace Carson Cross took the loss for the Huskies (24-14, 5-5), allowing six runs and 10 hits in eight innings while striking out six, while Joe DeRoche-Duffin had two hits and two RBI.

    H.S. baseball

    • Owen Tretter doubled home Alex Tryon with the winning run in the eighth inning, lifting East Lyme past Fitch 7-6 in an Easterm Connecticut Conference Large Division game at Dodd Stadium. C.J. Leindecker went the distance to earn the win, giving up eight hits while striking out eight, and Mike Morgan had three hits and three RBI and Matt Spang had three hits for the Vikings (2-2, 1-1). Kendrick Boss went 3-for-4 with a triple while Justin Marceau and Tim Jackson each added two hits for the Falcons (2-2,1-1).

    • T.T. Bowens and Tom McDonald combined to pitch a four-hit shutout, leading Montville past Stonington 7-0 in the ECC Medium. Doug DelaCruz had a double and two RBI while Jordan Zeppieri added two doubles and a single and Ben Rochester tripled, scored two runs and had an RBI for the Indians (4-1, 2-0). Kevin Ferrer and Billy Keane doubled for the Bears (3-2, 0-2).

    • Dylan Wilkinson, Alex Haines, Kody Lewis and Chris Munzer each had a single in Wheeler's 12-0 loss to Lyman Memorial in ECC Small action at Dodd Stadium. The Lions fell to 0-4. 0-2.

    H.S. softball

    • Meg Weir went 5-for-5, including a double and three triples, with four RBI and struck out 11 as unbeaten Norwich Free Academy trounced Hamden 15-3 in a non-league game. Britt Clark went 4-for-5, including two doubles, with three runs and two RBI for the Wildcats (4-0) and Alexa DeVito had three hits, including a two-run homer, and scored twice. Sophia Formiglio added two hits, including a double, with a run and an RBI.

    College softball

    • Coast Guard pulled off a pair of walk-off wins in a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College in the NEWMAC. Kelsey Gray's fielder's choice drove in the winning run in a 5-4 victory in game one. Emma Hvozdovich's two-run single capped a three-run rally in a 4-3 win in game two while Morgan Kingston's RBI single sparked the outburst.

    Sarah Sorenson (13-13) went the distance in both games for the Bears (14-14, 5-9). Kingston went a combined 5-for-8 and Jessie Richardson had four hits, including a home run, and two RBI and Casey Cruzpino had two hits and an RBI.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Ryan Reuling had four goals and two assists as Fitch downed South Kingstown (R.I.) 15-11. Luke Letellier and Noah Reuling each had two goals and two assists for Fitch (3-2) and Teddy Lee scored three times.

    • Kolton Sebastian scored St. Thomas More's only goal in a 15-1 loss to Worcester Academy. German Chavez made 11 saves for the Chancellors (0-3).

    College track

    • Connecticut College sophomore Bella Franz set a school record in the 1,500-meter race at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton, posting a time of 4:39.16 to break the old record of 4:39.21 set by Maura Danahy in 2002. In the men's 1,500, Ben Bosworth (3:52.85) and Connor Trapp (3:57.59) qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC Championships.

    H.S. girls' lacrosse

    • Belle Kenny had five goals an assist to lead East Lyme to a 19-4 victory over Bacon Academy in an ECC Large Division game played on Friday. Gabby Fiengo and Hailey Gordon each added two goals and one assist for the unbeaten Vikings (4-0, 4-0) while Steph deLaforcade, Nina Sanfilippo, Alley Lorah and Karoline Kelly scored two goals apiece. Bacon is 2-2, 2-2.
