    Local roundup: East Lyme 14s lose opener in New England Babe Ruth tourney

    Westfield, Mass. — East Marblehead (Mass.) took advantage of four East Lyme errors to score all of its runs in the fourth inning en route to a 4-2 victory over the Connecticut champions in the opening round of the New England Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball tournament on Saturday.

    East Lyme fought back with runs in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI singles by Jake Schelkly and Liam Holloway, but East Marblehead held on to advance to the winners' bracket in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

    East Lyme will play Nashua (N.H.), a 10-0 loser to host Westfield, in a losers' bracket game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

    Matt Malcom added two hits and scored a run for East Lyme, while Schelkly pitched well in defeat, allowing only five hits in a complete-game effort.

    State LL (11-12) Div. 3 baseball

    • Newington defeated Waterford 12-2 in four innings to advance to the championship game of the Connecticut Little League baseball (11-12) Division 3 tournament in West Hartford. Waterford will play Madison on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the right to play Newington in Sunday's final. Jared Burrows hit a home run for Waterford while Luke Sokolski, Trey Brennan, Trevor D'Amico and Robert Zawacki also had hits.

    Schooners rout Danbury

    • John Brucker (Marist) went 6-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored as the Mystic Schooners crushed the Danbury Westererns 21-7 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Richard Schenker (Yale) added four hits with three RBI and three runs, including a home run, while C.J. Moore (Lamar) hit a grand slam in the sixth for Mystic (21-15), his first homer of the season.

    Vermont nips Tigers

    • The Vermont Lake Monsters snapped Connecticut's four-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Tigers in a New York-Penn League game. Vermont (14-19) scored its only run when Chris Iriart led off the second with a solo home run off Tigers starter Tyler Alexander, who allowed his first run this season after pitching 16 consecutive scoreless innings. Josh Hedding pitched five innings of scoreless relief for Connecticut, retiring the first 11 batters he faced.

    State LL (10-11) Section II baseball

    • Tolland held off Waterford 10-9 on Thursday night to advance to the Connecticut Little League (10-11) Section II championship game. Waterford made things interesting in its final at bat by scoring seven runs after trailing 10-2. Will Rocchetti and Logan Avin each had three hits for Waterford. Avin had two hits in the sixth, including an RBI single that drove in the final run, while Rocchetti added a two-run double that inning.

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • Alex Fraser, Owen Robbins and Nolan Connolly each had two hits and Will Kane homered as East Lyme defeated Groton 5-2 on Thursday night. Daniel Allard earned the win with seven strikeouts while Derek Greenberg had an RBI double for Groton.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • New London defeated Waterford 18-17 on Thursday night, scoring the winning run on a bases loaded walk in the final inning. Randy Vidal and Derrel Mitchell had three hits each and Tristen Thompson and Zion Fraser had two hits for New London. Quinn Speller led Waterford with four hits, including a triple, while Kolby Quinn and Nick Petrini added two hits each.

    • Tucker Tevenpaugh struck out five in four innings as Ledyard defeated Norwich 9-8 on Thursday night. Jaiden Margiotti hit a walkoff double in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game and Teuenpaugh had a double. Collin Schaller struck out seven for Norwich.
