Reels, Jones among candidates for Mashantucket council

Mashantucket — A former Mashantucket Pequot tribal chairman and a former tribal councilor with lawsuits pending against the tribe are among nine candidates for the three council seats up for election.

Rodney Butler, the current chairman, and two other incumbents are seeking re-election to the seven-member council, which governs the tribe and its gaming enterprises, chiefly Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Tribal elections are set for Nov. 1.

A list of candidates certified by tribal officials and released Thursday includes the name of Kenny Reels, who previously served as a councilor for 18 years, including four as chairman. He lost a re-election bid in 2008 and failed in an attempt to return to the council in 2011. In recent years, he has served as vice chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Commission.

Charlene Jones, who served three council terms from 2001 to 2009, also is seeking to return to the panel.

Jones, who ran unsuccessfully in 2009 and 2011, has lodged several lawsuits against the tribe in tribal court and is appealing the decisions in some cases. She has sued over “transition pay” she says the tribe failed to pay her after her 2009 election defeat and, in a separate suit, has challenged Foxwoods’ hiring of Steven Thomas, a former council treasurer convicted of stealing from the tribe. Jones had sought the position for which Thomas was hired.

Jones’ appeals are to be heard by a tribal appellate judge.

Butler, who has been tribal chairman since 2010, is seeking a fifth consecutive council term.

The other incumbents running for re-election are Crystal Whipple, the vice chairwoman, who is seeking a third term; and Jean Swift, the treasurer, who replaced Steven Thomas when he was forced to resign in 2013.

The other candidates are Roland Fahnbulleh Jr., Daniel Menihan, Cynthia Sebastian-Welch and Timothy Walker.

The councilors whose seats are not up for election are Marjorie Colebut-Jackson, Fatima Dames, Roy Colebut-Ingram and Richard E. Sebastian.
