Man killed by train in Old Lyme identified

Old Lyme — Amtrak officials have identified the person who was killed Monday after being hit by a train near the Buttonball Road train bridge.

James McHugh, 62, of Old Lyme is the deceased.

Officials did not provide McHugh's street address.

Mike Tolbert, a spokesman with Amtrak, previously said Train 2190, an express from New York to Boston, "made contact with a trespasser on the tracks" Monday morning.

The incident occurred about 4 miles east of Old Saybrook Station, he said.

Tolbert said no injuries to the train's crew or its 246 passengers were reported.

Train 2190 was scheduled to arrive in New London at 8:37 a.m. but was held up in Old Lyme until about 10 a.m. The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m.

Amtrak officials said service was disrupted in both directions for almost two hours as police investigated.

Police said they didn't suspect a criminal element in the case.
