    Local roundup: Tigers win in 13 innings

    Burlington, Vt. — Joey Havrilak's three-run homer in the top of the 13th inning lifted the Connecticut Tigers to a 3-1 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Sunday.

    Cole Baumi reached on an error to open the top of the 13th, Josh Lester doubled him to third and Havrilak followed with a homer to right field. Havrilak was 4-for-6, Lester was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Blaise Salter and Junnell Ledezma had two hits each for the Tigers (2-1).

    Locke St. John started for the Tigers and pitched three-hit ball over six innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Miguel Mercedes had a run-scoring triple in the bottom of the 13th for Vermont.

    Schooners fall

    • The Ocean State Waves put together a 14-hit attack and beat the Mystic Schooners 4-2 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) had a run-scoring single in the ninth for the Schooners (4-6). Richard Slenker (Yale) had two hits, including a triple, and Zach Goldstein (Southern New Hampshire) scored twice for Mystic. 

    NL-Waterford Speedbowl

    • Paul Kusheba IV of Monroe picked up his first career victory in the SK Modified division, winning Saturday night's 35-lap feature. Kusheba, 21, had to handle numerous restarts to earn the victory. Rob Janovic Jr. of Waterford was second and Pawcatuck's Dennie Perry was third.

    Other division winners were Anthony Flannery of East Hampton (Late Model), Tony Membrino Jr. of Berlin (SK Lights), Al Stone III of Durham (Limited Sportsman), Charles Canfield of East Haven (Mini Stock) and Duane Noll of Monroe (Trucks).

    American Legion

    • Ledyard/Pawcatuck won the opener 3-2 but host Waterford came back for a 7-1 win in the second game as the teams split a Zone 6 doubleheader.

    Bryce Bedard pitched a five-hitter to win the opener and John Moody had two hits for LP while Justin Keating drove in two runs for Waterford. Alex Petchark went the distance for the win and doubled home two runs for Waterford in Game 2.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Jake Huff doubled and drove in three runs as Waterford Blue beat Tri-County 9-7 in the season opener for both teams. Tyler Howser had two hits for Waterford and Cam Brown singled, doubled and tripled for Tri-County and teammate Tom Cotter doubled.
