Darien, New Canaan still 1-2 in The Day's Top 10 H.S. football poll

There are hallowed rules to follow when voting in a sports poll.

One voter may rank teams by comparative scores. Another may not.

One voter may rank an unbeaten team playing a weaker schedule over another team with two losses that’s played — and won — against a tougher schedule.

One voter may think it’s unfair to take the No. 1 ranking away from a team when it hasn’t lost. Another voter believes that they should correct their mistake if they no longer feel they’ve been voting the right team number one.

Second-ranked New Canaan beat up Greenwich last Friday, 40-16. That’s the same Greenwich that top-ranked Darien beat in Week 3, 42-25.

One voter in The Day's Top 10 state high school football coaches’ poll flipped his number one pick from Darien to New Canaan this week. The Blue Wave received 11 first-place votes. No. 5 Southington received the other.

West Haven leapfrogged the Blue Knights from fifth to fourth after it thrashed Notre Dame of West Haven last Friday, 36-16. West Haven and Southington are both 6-0, but enough voters were impressed by the Westies to move them up one spot.

Neither changes were seismic, but it shows the subjectivity of polls because polls are opinions.

New London (6-0) inched closer to cracking the Top 10. The Whalers are 12th this week behind Cheshire (5-1), the latter of which lost at West Haven in Week 4 (41-14).

Norwich Free Academy (4-2) is the other area team to receive a vote.
