    UConn women cruise 111-39 in exhibition opener

    Storrs — UConn's new-look women's basketball team look quite similar to the old one.

    Five players scored in double figures as the Huskies began the post-Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, Morgan Tuck era with a resounding 111-39 victory over Division II Indiana University (Pa.) in an exhibition game at Gampel Pavilion.

    Sophomore Katie Lou Samuelson led the way for UConn with 24 points, going 10 of 19 from the field with five rebounds and four assists. Junior Gabby Williams also had a big night for the Huskies with 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals.

    UConn led 33-19 after the first quarter before outscoring the Crimson Hawks 35-5 in the second quarter to take a 68-24 halftime lead. The Huskies closed the first half on a 19-0 run.

    They also dominated the second half, outscoring Indiana 43-15.

    UConn shot 61.4 percent (43 of 70) from the floor while limiting Indians to just 32.6 percent shooting.

    In addition to Samuelson and Williams, junior Kia Nurse finished with 17 points and sophomore Napheesa Collier added 13.

    Freshman Kyla Irwin scored 12 points in her collegiate debut while adding four rebounds, while freshman guards Molly Bent and Crystal Dangerfield combined for four points, four assists and three rebounds.

    The Huskies play their final exhibition game on Sunday against Division II Pace University at 1 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford.
