    Local roundup: UConn women win soccer, field hockey titles

    Storrs — Rachel Hill's first-half goal held up as No. 1 UConn beat No. 3 Southern Methodist 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament final on Sunday.

    Hill, the tournament's outstanding offensive player, scored at 39:07 off a long pass from Kim Urbanek. UConn defender Toriana Patterson won the outstanding defensive player award and goalie Emily Armstrong made three saves. Tanya Altui, Stephanie Ribeiro, Hill, Armstrong and Patterson made the all-tournament team for UConn (18-2-1). The Huskies receive the AAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Div. I tournament. The field will be announced on Monday.

    College field hockey

    • Charlotte Veitner had a goal and an assist as No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Liberty 3-2 in the Big East Conference tournament final at Philadelphia. UConn, ranked fourth nationally, won its 16th Big East title and 12th since 2000. Anna Middendorf and Amanda Collins had goals, Darby Smith and Olivia Bolles had assists and Nina Klein made two saves for UConn (20-1). Svea Boker, Casey Umstead, Veitner, Collins and Middendorf were named to the all-tournament team. The Huskies will learn their opponent in the NCAA Div. I tournament when the field is announced on Monday.

    Men's water polo

    • Connecticut College lost to host Mercyhurst 11-8 in the final of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference West Region championship. Dylan Pinckert and Henry McMillan had two goals each and Sean King, Carlos Heros, Stephen Cress and Isaih Porter also had goals for Conn (11-15). Matthew Wegman and Porter made four saves each for the Camels. 

    Road racing

    • Paul Gennaro of New London won the EBAC Fall Challenge on Saturday, winning the 4.75-mile race in 25:45. Rebecca Nelson of New London was the top women's finisher, coming in sixth in 29:34. Also finishing in the top 10 were Brian Whitney of Niantic (28:28), Scott Deslongchamps of Putnam (28:57), Jacob Watts-St. Germain of Old Lyme (29:11), Robert Buttermore of Waterford (29:16), Dana Award of Waterford (29:55), Bobby Clark of Mystic (30:08), Tyler Swanson of Mystic (31:16) and Mitchell Smolen of Quaker Hill (31:26).
