UConn begins national search for offensive coordinator

Coach Bob Diaco vowed to make changes to fix the issues that plagued his UConn football team during a disappointing season.

    Diaco kept his word.

UConn announced on Monday that assistant coach Frank Verducci, who served as offensive coordinator last season and for the first nine games in 2016, will not return to the coaching staff next season. Verducci finished the season working with the tight ends while David Corley took over the offensive coordinator duties for the final three games.

The school also announced that it will immediately start a national search for a new offensive coordinator.

The Huskies ranked last in the country in scoring offense at 14.8 points per game. They scored just 16 points in their last four games. They finished at a disappointing 3-9 overall, losing their last six games, including the regular-season finale to Tulane, 38-13, on Saturday.

"The offensive production of our football team in 2016 was far below the standards that any of us expect it to be," Diaco said in a released statement. "This is a very important decision for the future of our football program and we will bring to our team an individual who can make an immediate impact as we continue to build the program. A proven record of success in developing individual talent and creating a dynamic offensive plan will be central to the search."

Diaco thanked Verducci, who will fill a non-coaching position, for his service to the program. He plans to evaluate each member of his coaching staff.
