    Local roundup: Avery Point baseball splits pair in Florida

    Vero Beach, Fla. — Sean Ranz allowed one hit and no runs in 2.1 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate win as the Avery Point baseball team beat Gettysburg JV 7-5 in the first of its two games Thursday.

    Mike Savino had two hits, two RBI and a run for the Pointers (5-4) and Cote Libby added two hits, a run and an RBI. Also, Mike Corso went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Waterford’s Mike Rocchetti had three hits and scored.

    Avery Point lost its second game to Westchester CC 13-5. Vinnie Pallisco had two hits, two runs and an RBI for Avery Point and Ryan Bagdasarian had three RBI. Tom Caravetta and Savino each had two hits and scored, too.

    College swimming

    • Connecticut College picked up its second All-American honor in two days when its women's 400-yard medley relay team finished sixth in the championship race of the NCAA Division III Championship meet in Shenandoah, Texas. The team sophomore Danielle Fergus, freshman Mary Erb, senior Anna Peterson and sophomore Olivia Haskell swam 3:45.55 in its qualifying race before posting a time of 3:47.07 in the final.

    Also for the Conn women, the 200 freestyle relay team of Julie Kleier, Haskell, Juliette Lee and Lily Gribbel finished 14th in 1:34.78 while Peterson was 24th in the 100 butterfly (56.63) and Maeve Wilber was 33rd in the 400 IM (4:39.58).

    • For the Conn men, its best finish during day two was its 200 freestyle relay team of George Tilneac, Drake Freiberg, Mike Fothergill and Niko Brosnihan, which placed 10th in 1:22.07. The Camels' 400 medley relay team of Fothergill, Freiberg, Tilneac and Alan Pite was 16th (3:21.63) while Pite was 17th in the 400 IM (4:02.12) and Tilneac was 18th in the 100 fly (49.25).

    Coast Guard Academy sophomore Taylor Rowe finished the 200 freestyle in 1:43.70, but failed to qualify for the final. He will compete in the 1,650 freestyle on Saturday.

    H.S. swimming

    • East Lyme's Jack Wheeler earned all-state honors by placing fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke during the CIAC Class M Championship meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown. Wheeler finished in 1:01.84 and helped the Vikings finish ninth in the team standings with 226 points. Weston won the team title with 672 points.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Emily Cohen had four goals and two assists to lead Claremont Mudd Scripps to a 14-6 nonleague victory over Conn College. The Camels (0-2) couldn't overcome a 9-2 halftime deficit. Tina Balzotti scored three goals for Conn while Jamie Navoni scored twice and Julia Loesch had three assists.
