Black Wolves miss chance to clinch playoff spot

Rochester, N.Y. — Shawn Evans and Kevin Crowley enjoyed milestone moments, but the New England Black Wolves suffered a tough 15-13 loss to the Rochester Knighthawks in a Natonal Lacrosse League game at Blue Cross Arena.

Evans (three goals, four assists) recorded his 1,000th career point while Crowley scored his 200th career goal. Both reached their milestones on the same play when Evans assisted on Crowley's goal with 1:58 left in the opening quarter.

Evans became just the eighth player in NLL history to reach 1,000 career points.

New England (8-9) missed out on an opportunity to clinch a playoff bid. They will try again next Saturday in its regular-season finale at home against the Vancouver Stealth at Mohegan Sun Arena. Rochester is 6-10.

Reilly O'Connor (two goals, five assists), also had seven points for the Black Wolves while goalie Evan Kirk made 44 saves to break the franchise single-season record with 663 saves. Chad Culp also recorded his 500th career point when he assisted on a goal by Seth Oakes 2:35 into the second quarter.

New England led 7-6 before Rochester scored the final two goals of the first half to take an 8-7 lead. The Knighthawks would never surrender the lead, scoring the first goal of the second half for a 9-7 advantage and leading by as many as three goals in the second half when Dan Dawson scored his fourth goal of the night to give Rochester a 14-11 lead late in the game.

Goals by Evans (with 3:26 left) and Crowley (with 1:22 remaining) pulled the Black Wolves to within a goal, 14-13, but the Knighthawks scored an empty net goal with 49 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.
