Ace Atkins signs Spenser novel Wednesday at Cottrell Brewery

    Ace Atkins (Joe Worthem)

Do you think New York Times bestselling author Ace Atkins is ever NOT typing?

The dude cranks out two typically superb novels a year. One is in his Mississippi noir series starring ex-Army Ranger-turned-small-(mean) town sheriff Quinn Colson. The other is when he writes a new Spenser novel, for indeed Atkins was hand-picked several years ago by the heirs of Robert B. Parker to continue one of the most iconic PI series ever.

The great news? By virtually every critical account or fan letter, Atkins absolutely nails Parker and Spenser – replicating characters, setting and nuance while, at the same time, expanding the scope of the books in truly amazing fashion. The latest Atkins-penned Spenser adventure is "Little White Lies," in which the detective and sidekick Hawk chase down a crafty thief who preys on wealthy women – and who claims to be a CIA agent.

Brilliant, clever and funny stuff — and I say that in full disclosure since the author is a friend. Meet him and drink a few fine cold ones when Atkins signs books Wednesday at the Cottrell Brewing Company in Pawcatuck. It's part of the "Beer & Books" series co-sponsored by Cottrell and Bank Square Books.

Ace Atkins, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cottrell Brewing, 100 Mechanic St., Pawcatuck; admission and beer samples free, books available for purchase; (860) 536-3795.
