Stonington -- The Stonington Harbor Yacht Club will host a free Coast Guard Auxiliary boat safety inspection for all boat owners and operators at its docks on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vessels meeting all requirements will be awarded certification stickers. There is no penalty if requirements are not met and owners will be given a list of items required so they can meet the appropriate safety standards. In many cases boating insurance agencies offer discounts for vessels which undergo a Vessel Safety Check every year.

Items that are checked include life jackets, registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation, fire extinguishers and distress signals, battery covers and connections. No registration is needed to participate in the event.
