H.S. football: Cullina throws for three TDs as Valley/OL cruises

Deep River — Michael Cullina threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as Valley Regional/Old Lyme continued its push toward another state playoff berth with a 28-6 victory over Rockville on Friday night.

Coach Tim King felt his Warriors (7-1) weren't as sharp as a week ago when they handed Cromwell/Portland its first loss 34-28 in overtime, but Cullina was too much for the Rams (0-8). He ran 13 yards for the game's first score, then threw two touchdown passes to Ryan Santos (40 and 24 yards) before completing his night with a 24-yard TD strike to Jae'len Arnum.

Brian Funk kicked all four extra points for Valley/OL, which scored all of its points in the first half.

Cullina finished 7 of 11 for 158 yards. He was intercepted once.

    In other games:

    • Norwich Free Academy scored all of its points in the first quarter and cruised to its third straight win, a 42-15 rout of winless Waterford. The Lancers (0-7) avoided a shutout by scoring twice in the second half as L.J. Pezzolesi ran for one score and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Max Mazzella.

    • Thames River won its third straight game with a 62-28 victory over Platt Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Trey Stimson had a big game for the Crusaders (4-3), rushing for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. He also returned an interception for a touchdown.

Quarterback Zack Jackson completed only four passes, but three were for touchdowns and he finished with 129 passing yards. Albert Velasquez also returned an interception for a touchdown for Thames River, had five interceptions on the night and also recovered a fumble.
