Greta Gerwig’s (“Frances Ha” and “Mistress America”) directorial debut film, “Lady Bird,” is as much a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story as it is a mother-daughter story. We watch Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn” and “Atonement”) as she captures the contradictory nature of her idealistic character Christine, aka Lady Bird, in a convincing performance. Her mother, played by Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”), acts as the sobering reality check needed in Lady Bird’s dreamy world. “Lady Bird” has all the threads essential for a great film: convincing actors, relatable yet complex characters, wonderful cinematic devices, small revelations throughout and a satisfying ending. But, above all, the story is inherently relatable — and I don’t think that just applies to me, someone who identified many similarities between Lady Bird and myself. There are many points that will resonate with anyone if they are willing to pay attention. — Mary Biekert
