Tracking the Bears

• Coast Guard Academy sophomore Justin Kane was selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball defensive player of the week. He averaged 16.5 points and 10 rebounds in wins over Connecticut College (84-69) on Sunday and Fisher College (81-75) on Thursday. The Bears snapped a 10-game losing streak in the series against the Camels. Kane ranks second on the team in scoring at 15.2 points and first in the NEWMAC in rebounding at 9.6 per game. The Bears (4-1), who are riding a four-game winning streak, host arch rival Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• The New England Small College Athletic Conference named Connecticut College's Samuel Pillar as its men's squash performer of the week for the first time.

Around the region

• UConn sophomore Christian Vital earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll for men's basketball after averaging 24 points in overtime wins against Columbia and Monmouth.

• The AAC selected UConn senior Kia Nurse to its women's basketball weekly honor roll. Nurse averaged 20 points and shot 88 percent from the field (14-for-16), including 92 percent from 3-point range (11-for-12) in two wins.

• Jada Lucas, an all-state guard out of New London High School, has seen limited action so far in her first year on the Hartford women's basketball team. She's played a total of three minutes in three appearances, missing her only two shots attempts while grabbing a rebound and adding an assist for the Hawks (4-4).

• Former Ledyard High School all-state standout Darnay Gray came off the bench to score a season-high 29 points and add eight rebounds in Lyndon State College's 89-82 win over Maine Farmington on Saturday. A junior forward, Gray is averaging 10.6 points and 3.8 rebounds this season for the Division III school.

• Hannah Behringer of Old Lyme recently finished a fine career playing for the Bates College women's soccer team. A team captain as a senior, she appeared in 60 career games, making 49 starts, and finished with seven goals and four assists. She was named to the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team this fall.

• Colby College sophomore Mae Sefransky, a Fitch High School graduate, earned All-NESCAC Fall Academic team honors. A member of the volleyball team, she is majoring in Geology with minors in Environmental Studies and Anthropology.

• Stonington graduate Libby Morrison added to her impressive list of awards competing for The College of New Jersey field hockey team. Morrison was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference offensive player of the year and also received South Atlantic All-Region first team honors. She had 16 goals and nine assists for a team-best 41 points, helping TCNJ reached the Final Four where the Lions lost in the national semifinals.

• Casey Sullivan, a St. Bernard graduate from East Lyme, is a team captain for the Mercy College women's basketball team. A senior forward, she is averaging 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in seven games.

• Nichols College guard Deante Bruton, a sophomore from New London and a Ledyard High graduate, is off to a fast start, averaging a team-best 19.3 points and 4.5 rebounds through six games. He earned Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors last season.

• Trinity College's Luke Letellier, a sophomore wide receiver on the football team, was named to the All-NESCAC Fall Academic team. He is a Fitch graduate.

• Alain Maceno (NFA) and Jordan Grant (Ledyard) are reserve forwards for the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team. Grant has appeared in six games, averaging 2.5 points, whole Maceno has seen action in two games.
