Wreaths to be placed on veteran graves at Sacred Heart Cemetery

Norwich — The community will gather on Saturday to honor veterans as part of the annual Wreaths Across America initiative.

Due to a system failure affecting some locations, including Sacred Heart Cemetery, there were no wreaths on "Wreaths Across America Day" on Dec. 16.  In an effort to correct the mistake, more than 500 wreaths are being delivered for placement at Sacred Heart. To assist with placing the large number of wreaths, American Legion Post 104 will have help from one engine company from each city fire department, along with help from Boy Scout Troop 80 of Taftville.

"This year we will be able to place a wreath on the grave of every known veteran at Sacred Heart Cemetery. We are working quickly to identify the local interred locations of Norwich residents who were killed in action in any war and our excess wreaths will be placed on their graves," said location coordinator and post Junior Vice Commander Dennis Baptiste.

The Wreaths Across America tradition began more than 20 years ago, when the Worcester Wreath Company from Harrington, Maine, began donating and placing wreaths on the headstones of fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery. The company continues to be a donor for and major supporter of the project.
